| Understanding Herding Titles: The American Kennel Club offers two Herding programs, Herding Trials, and Herding Tests. In the trial program, dogs are individually scored, and then ranked, with a minimum score required to proceed. Three legs under three different judges are required to earn each of the following titles: Herding Started (HS), the started level, Herding Intermediate (HI) the intermediate level, and Herding Excellent (HX) the advanced level. Once the advanced level has been achieved, the dog may then achieve the Herding Champion (HCH) title, by earning 15 points through class placements at the advanced level. The testing program is judged on a pass/fail basis, with no scoring or class placements. Two legs, under two different testers must be accomplished. The Herding Tested (HT) title involves moving the livestock (sheep or ducks) around a small arena, and performing both a stop, and a recall. The Pre-Trial (PT) title involves moving the livestock through a larger course, a stop and recall are also required. |
